I’m just here to help you survive.
As Terrence noted in his water deep dive, the next issue will focus on food. But, before we get into all that, I thought it might be useful to tell you a little bit more about myself and why—of all the things I could be writing about (marketing, innovation, breast cancer)—this is the only thing that has motivated me enough to actually do it.
As I said in the first issue, Spain spurred me to do it now. But this is something that has been building for a long time.
While born in NY, I spent most of my childhood on 40 acres over 13 miles of dirt roads outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico. No phones. Electricity only at night. We had our own well, propane and generator, and solar panels. We had a garden and a greenhouse. It was just my dad and I, our three dogs, and rabbits, coyotes, and rattlesnakes. Our closest neighbor was six miles away.
We had a ham radio and my dad taught me to drive at around 10—so I could get out in case of an emergency.
I moved to San Francisco, and experienced the 1989 earthquake where I had to eat peanut butter & jelly for three days without power. Later, I moved to NY where my family lived without power or heat for four days during Hurricane Sandy before moving in with relatives who were unaffected.
I witnessed the images of the Bay Area orange skies and masks from the wildfires of 2020. I’ve watched disasters unfold—from Katrina to North Carolina to the LA fires. And still, I’ve done nothing to be more ready myself—except keep the gas in my car above half a tank.
I mean we talked about it—my friends and I. And we were talking about it more and more. And more of us were talking about it. But that was it. We still weren’t doing anything about it.
It seemed there had to be an easy way to be more prepared today—right where we are, without having to overhaul our own lives.
And so, Salt + Prepper was born—a way to get ready, together. We’ve got big dreams, but we’re starting simple: a regular newsletter we hope helps you stay grounded and ready for whatever comes. If it helps you and yours keep your footing—or helps someone else find theirs—we’re doing our job.
For those of you who have read the prior issues, how’s it going? Do you have cash on hand now, in small denominations? Have you secured your water stash? 💧
Coming up next: Food. Then power, communication, community, foreign passports, money, kids, and pets to name just a few. It really is endless.
Thank you for being here. If you want new issues, subscribe. It’s FREE!
Please share with anyone you’d want on your island.
I had no idea how many natural disasters you witnessed or were within such proximity of. Your childhood memories explains so much about you. If anyone could help me survive, you have all of the markings of the guide I would trust to lead me there.
Aww. Thanks for reading and for the faith!
